Which Toothpaste Should I Use?

"Which toothpaste should I use?” – This question comes up quite often here at Smile 360 during check ups. But really… which toothpaste should you use? There are several things to look for when you are choosing your toothpaste. The main things the dentists at Smile 360 recommend you look for are:

  • ADA Seal
  • Fluoride
The ADA Seal of approval assures that the product has been thoroughly tested, and is effective with regards to what it says it will do. This seal is awarded for 3 years, and manufacturers must reapply to continue the recognition. Fluoride is a mineral that hardens teeth and prevents tooth decay. It may even reverse early stages of tooth decay. Fluoride is especially recommended for children over 2, and seniors. Of course everyone has a different mouth, so there are toothpastes for specific needs and wants.
  • Tartar control
  • Sensitivity
  • Gum Disease
  • Whitening
Tartar control toothpastes do not remove tartar, but prevent it from building up. Tartar can only be removed by a professional during a prophylaxis (cleaning). Toothpastes for sensitive teeth can lessen discomfort by creating barriers and blocking irritants from reaching nerves. A few weeks of continued use usually relieves any discomfort. Gingivitis (gum inflammation) usually precedes periodontitis (gum disease), which has been known to cause other health problems including stroke and heart attack, and can even worsen diabetes. There are some toothpastes that help treat gingivitis, and one main ingredient to look for is Triclosan. This ingredient attacks bacteria that causes plaque. To help maintain the shade of your teeth after a bleaching procedure, whitening toothpastes are available. These toothpastes also help lighten stains caused by coffee or tobacco. One thing to be aware of: using whitening toothpastes for prolonged periods of time may cause harm to the tooth enamel. There are no over-the-counter whitening toothpastes with the ADA seal.
