Excessive tooth decay and tooth loss detracts from the appearance of your smile and undermines oral health. For patients struggling with numerous missing teeth, dentures are a trusted solution. Dr. Vincent Ip at Smile360 offers high-quality traditional and implant-supported dentures at his Austin, TX, practice. Depending on how many natural teeth you have remaining, Dr. Ip can provide a partial or full-arch denture that rejuvenates the function and beauty of your smile.
Types of Dentures
The location and number of missing teeth are both important factors when deciding which type of denture is most appropriate, as is the patient's budget. There are three main types available:
These dentures are designed to replace a continuous section of teeth, rather than the entire row. Your doctor can attach partials in a number of ways: by securing it in place with wires or dental crowns to teeth on either side of the gap or by anchoring it with dental implants surgically implanted into the jaw. Because it does not require surgery, the former option is typically less expensive.
Full-arch dentures are recommended to patients missing most or all of their teeth on the top or bottom arch. These dentures are customized based on molds of your gums to ensure a snug fit. The suction created between the gums and the denture helps to hold them in place, though there are a number of special dental adhesives available for additional security. These types of dentures must be removed each day for cleaning.
Dentures are a reliable and affordable option for replacing numerous missing teeth.
Implant-supported dentures are attached to dental implants and are not removable. Patients will care for them just as they would their natural teeth. Because implant-retained dentures are so stable, patients can be confident that their teeth will not slip out of place. Additionally, dental implants stimulate the jawbone to prevent bone deterioration, a common occurrence in the wake of a missing tooth.
While our team does not place implants, we can design and attach customized dentures to your implants once you have recovered from surgery.
What to Expect During Treatment
Most patients will need to schedule at least two appointments to receive their dentures. During the first, Dr. Ip will review your candidacy for dentures and take impressions of your mouth to send to our trusted off-site lab for fabrication. During the second, you will receive the final restoration. Because it takes about one to two weeks to create the denture, you can usually expect a wait between the two visits.
Regardless of which type of denture you choose, you can trust that our practice will craft a restoration that is proportionate to your bite patterns, smile, and overall facial symmetry so that it looks as natural as possible. Our dentures are also extremely strong and can withstand a substantial bite force.
