Vivos System
What Makes Vivos Different?

A Solution for Snoring, Sleep Apnea, and TMJ Disorders

For decades, dentists like Dr. Ip have been recommending oral appliance therapy for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. The Vivos System is the next step in the evolution of dental appliances.

While traditional oral appliances alleviate snoring by opening up your airway during the night, they do nothing to actually modify the structure of your jaws. If you ever stop wearing your appliance, your airway will collapse again, and your snoring will return. Vivos oral appliances, on the other hand, combine the disciplines of dental sleep medicine and orthodontics. When you wear the custom-made Vivos appliance, it will both open up your airway and apply precise pressure to shift your teeth and reposition your jaws. Within two years, patients can achieve an enhanced airway structure that will stay open without the use of a dental appliance.

In short, the Vivos System can potentially offer you a permanent solution to snoring, mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and even TMJ disorders.

I normally wouldn't think of the dentist as a family-like atmosphere, but that's what it feels like here! I've been coming here for a couple years and during each visit, every part of it goes smoothly. The staff seem to work really well together and it makes for a very comfortable, friendly, and personalized experience. They are also quick and knowledgeable, so I never end up waiting to be seen or have my questions answered. Definitely recommend this place!

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes you to stop breathing while you sleep. The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Patients with OSA stop breathing during the night because the soft tissues in their mouths and throats collapse and obstruct the airway, which often results in loud snoring and fitful sleep. Because patients with sleep apnea don't get the restful sleep they need, and because their oxygen levels can decrease dangerously during the night, they are at higher risk for health concerns like high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression.

What Causes OSA?

A variety of factors contribute to airway collapse during the night, including a patient's weight and lifestyle choices, such as smoking cigarettes. However, one of the most common causes of OSA is a poorly developed upper or lower jaw, which dentists refer to as maxillary hypoplasia and/or mandibular retrognathia/retrusion.

Many of us have underdeveloped jaws to some degree, which is why so many people require orthodontic treatment and wisdom tooth removal. However, these therapies don't necessarily address the effect that underdeveloped jaws can have on the airway.

The Vivos System is designed to correct this root cause of OSA. Through the emerging science of Pneumopedics®, Vivos appliances induce changes in the dental structure over time, permanently relieving the nightly obstruction of the airway.

Sleep Apnea Also Affects Children

Vivos Can Help

Sleeping Child

Did you know that children can suffer from sleep apnea? Sleep apnea is particularly dangerous in young people because it can interfere with their physical and emotional development. Your child may suffer from sleep apnea if he or she struggles with:

  • Bedwetting
  • Chronic allergies
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Swollen tonsils and adenoids
  • Trouble at school
  • Irritability
  • Frequent headaches
  • Restless sleep
  • Snoring
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Nightmares or night terrors
  • Arrested growth
  • Crowded or crooked teeth

All of these conditions could be the result of your child not being able to breathe properly during sleep. The Vivos System is an ideal treatment for pediatric patients because it can permanently reposition their teeth and jaws, potentially saving your child from a lifetime of disordered sleep. Dr. Ip welcomes children at his practice in Austin, TX.

Consultation and Assessment

If you suspect you are suffering from OSA, request a consultation at Smile 360 in Austin, TX. Dr. Ip will conduct an initial screening to check for signs of an airway issue. He will also take detailed scans of your teeth and jaws. If he determines that you likely have OSA, he will refer you to a trusted sleep doctor who can arrange for an at-home sleep test.

Comprehensive Diagnosis

Dr. Ip will collaborate with your sleep doctor to review the images of your dental structures and the results of your sleep test. Together, they can arrive at a comprehensive diagnosis of your sleep disorder and agree on the most ideal treatment approach.

Airway Intelligence Report

If Dr. Ip and your sleep doctor agree that you are a good candidate for the Vivos System, they can send your scans and test results to Vivos. Dr. Ip will then work with Vivos technicians to create your Airway Intelligence Report. This report, based on Visos' sophisticated algorithm, will explain the step-by-step plan to correct your airway issue.

Vivos will reference Dr. Ip's scans of your bite to create your custom medical devices. They will then send the appliances to Dr. Ip, who will give them to you and provide you with detailed instructions on how to wear and care for them. You will then begin to wear the devices while you sleep. Within 12 to 24 months, your treatment should be complete.

Better Sleep, Better Health

After the conclusion of your Vivos treatment, you can expect your airway to be permanently improved. Many patients are able to sleep soundly through the night without the assistance of CPAP or dental appliances. Now that you are able to achieve better sleep, you may notice improvements in your physical and mental health.

Vivos FAQ

Q. How popular is the Vivos System?

More than 33,000 patients worldwide have improved their airway health through the Vivos System.

Q. Are Vivos appliances uncomfortable?

No. Your devices will be designed based on highly detailed scans of your bite, so they should fit snugly and comfortably over your teeth. Within a few weeks, most patients get used to wearing the appliances at night and don't give them a second thought. Of course, if you ever need to make adjustments to your appliance, you can visit our Austin office.

Q. Are there any risks associated with the Vivos System?

As a non-surgical therapy, the Vivos System involves very little chance of an adverse outcome. Because your devices will be designed by Austin's Dr. Ip and the experts at Vivos, you can trust that they will precisely address the cause of your OSA. The health risks of not treating your sleep disorder are far more serious than the risks of this non-invasive solution.
