Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, can cause significant pain as well as oral health issues. At Smile 360, we strive to accommodate all the needs of our patients. For those who require wisdom tooth removal, we work with a trusted oral surgeon who can extract these teeth at our office in Austin, TX. You can receive the vital care you need in an environment that is familiar, comfortable, and convenient. As your primary dentist, Dr. Vincent Ip is familiar with your oral health and will coordinate your procedure to ensure the best possible outcome.
A Preventive Solution
Wisdom teeth typically develop and erupt during your late teens or early twenties. Often, these molars are poorly aligned, which can lead to damage to surrounding tooth roots and jawbone. In other cases, you may not have sufficient jaw space, causing the teeth to only partially erupt or become impacted in the jaw. Significant infection, pain, and dental damage can result from these complications.
We typically recommend early wisdom tooth extraction, even if pain has not developed. Early removal can protect your oral health and eliminate any worry of decay or dental damage caused by wisdom teeth. Dr. Ip can evaluate the positioning of your teeth and discuss your options with you. It is not uncommon for patients to have their wisdom teeth removed as a preparatory procedure for future orthodontic treatments. This procedure is often suggested to prevent future overcrowding. If you are considering Invisalign® for your child, preventative extraction may be recommended.
What Does Wisdom Tooth Removal Entail?
When it becomes evident that you may need or want wisdom tooth removal, we can arrange a consultation for you with an oral surgeon. To ensure that the process is as convenient as possible for our patients, we have an oral surgeon who is in our office several times a month. They will evaluate your bite to determine if and when extraction will be necessary.
During the wisdom tooth removal, your surgeon can provide deeper intravenous (IV) sedation to ensure your comfort. Depending on whether it is a simple or complex extraction the procedure can differ significantly. For simple cases, we can remove the tooth fairly easily through a traditional extraction procedure. However, complex extractions will require the surgeon to first make an incision to access any gum tissue or bone that may be covering the tooth. The tooth will then be removed. In many cases, your surgeon will extract the teeth in pieces to cause less damage to the surrounding tissues. Typically, extraction of four wisdom teeth will take one to two hours.
The primary focus of the Smile 360 team is maintaining your oral health. We always strive to do what is in the best interest of our patients by arranging high-quality treatments such as wisdom tooth extraction.
What to Expect During Recovery
Typically, patients need to arrange for a few days to recover following wisdom tooth removal. Swelling and soreness are common side effects that can usually be managed with over-the-counter medications and any prescriptions that we provide. It is also recommended that throughout your recovery, you avoid physical activity, only eat soft foods, and do not use a straw. Following these guidelines can help improve healing and avoid complications.
